The computers available to customers, the multi-function device (photocopier and printer) and other equipment are located in the customer areas on the service floor and ground floor.
The customer computers are provided for searching and locating information and materials in the Library of Parliament Selma collection and other databases and for accessing digital materials and online services as well as for research purposes. The computers may also be used for accessing e-mails and writing documents.
The computers can be used free of charge. No prior booking is required. The customer computers have Windows 10 operating systems, Firefox and Chrome browsers and office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, image viewer). Customers are not allowed to install software on the computers.
The library staff can assist in the use of databases within the scope of the library’s areas of expertise. Customers are expected to know how to use the software applications.
The customer computers may be used for reading the Archive of Parliament’s CD-ROM discs containing parliamentary committee minutes, including expert statements since 2003. Printing out parliamentary materials will not reduce your printing quota. Contact Customer Services to make bookings and request material.
There is a multi-function device on the ground floor, operated with your library card, for copying and scanning documents and printing files from customer computers. Customer Services will link your library card to a user account with a free monthly allowance of 100 photocopies, 50 printouts and 50 scanned documents. Copies ordered from the library are subject to a charge.
To print a document, simply print as usual from the computer you are using and enter your library card number. The job will be printed out right away on the multi-function device on the ground floor. You can also use a so-called protected printing option where you use a password to start the job at the multi-function printer. A dedicated customer computer is available for printing out parliamentary and legislation material (Finlex) free of charge.
Files stored on customer computers are automatically deleted daily after the library’s closing time. You can save the files on a memory stick, CD-ROM or DVD disc or send them to your e-mail as attachments.
In the customer premises, there are two book scanners to convert material into PDF files. One of the scanners is available on a first-come-first-served basis, the other one requires an advance booking.
One of the customer computers is connected to a microfilm reader. The device can be used for reading microfilmed periodicals, committee and other documents as well as for converting these into PDF format. The files can also be printed out on paper. Printing out parliamentary materials will not reduce your printing quota. Contact Customer Services to make bookings and request material.
The microfilm reader is available free of charge and used on a self-service basis. You can save the PDF files on a USB memory stick, CD-ROM or DVD disc or send them to your e-mail as attachments.
There are self-service machines in the library’s lobby. You can use the machines to borrow and return materials.
Interlibrary loans and reading room loans are processed at the customer service desk.
You can use your own laptop in the library and connect it to the Internet through an unprotected Wi-Fi. The wireless network is provided for research, study and search for information. Ask Customer Services for instructions for use, a username and a password (changed monthly).
No content filtering is applied for web browsing. Data traffic that contains viruses, malware or executables is blocked. The browsing history is deleted when you close the browser. Files saved on computers are automatically deleted when the computer is restarted and daily after the library’s closing time.
